Uncover Angkor's Secrets: Phnom Penh's Hidden Gem Guesthouse!
Okay, buckle up, buttercups. We're diving headfirst into a review of Uncover Angkor's Secrets: Phnom Penh's Hidden Gem Guesthouse! Now, I'm not gonna lie, I went in with pretty high expectations. The name alone screams "adventure!" and "secret knowledge!" Did it deliver? Well, let's just say it was a tangled web of almost perfect, with a few delightful (and sometimes frustrating) quirks.
First Impressions & The Accessibility Angle - A Mixed Bag (But Promising!)
Right off the bat, the accessibility stuff… well, it’s a work in progress. The elevator? Thank goodness for it, because Phnom Penh heat is a beast. But the website didn't scream detailed facilities for disabled guests, so I'm guessing there might be some hiccups for anyone relying on a wheelchair. They also had car park [free of charge] which is always a win in a busy city, and a car park [on-site]. Airport transfer? Yep, they've got it. Score one for ease of getting there. They seem to know their way around the airport so that's one less stress. Still, accessibility could be better, it’s obvious that this establishment is looking to improve that.
Cleanliness & Safety - Breathe Easy (Mostly!)
Okay, I'm a bit of a germaphobe, especially these days. So, the whole Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, Hand sanitizer everywhere, and Professional-grade sanitizing services thing? HUGE sigh of relief. Seriously, I could breathe easily. They also do Room sanitization between stays which is a good one. They've also got a first aid kit and doctor/nurse on call! I'm happy for it, let's face it… the food can mess with you at times! They've got Staff trained in safety protocol. This is reassuring!
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking - Oh, the Food! (and the Bar… Maybe Skip That?)
Dining… now, this is where things got… exciting. The Restaurants (multiple, hooray!). A la carte in restaurant - YES! I'm not a fan of buffet-style eating unless I really trust it. The Asian cuisine in restaurant? Incredible. Seriously, the fresh spring rolls? To. Die. For. And the Vegetarian restaurant options? Extensive and delicious, even for a meat-eater like me. They also feature Asian breakfast, Breakfast [buffet] with International cuisine in restaurant which is a great option! Breakfast service to your room is perfect for a lazy morning, Breakfast in room! They also seem to offer, Breakfast takeaway service which is great for the quick-to-go folks! Coffee/tea in restaurant is a must! Desserts in restaurant? Always a yes. I also saw Happy hour, Poolside bar! Yesss, Poolside bar! They also have Snack bar and Soup in restaurant.
Okay, the bar. Let's just say the Happy hour deals felt… well, a little too happy. The quality of the drinks varied, one moment I was sipping a delightful cocktail, and the next, I was staring at a sugary, artificial concoction. So, my advice? Stick to the food. You won't regret it. And the Bottle of water on arrival is a nice touch!
The Rooms - A Cozy Sanctuary (With a Few Hiccups)
The room itself? Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. I had a non-smoking room (thank goodness), with Air conditioning that actually worked! Air conditioning in the Phnom Penh heat is the difference between living and dying. They have Additional toilet, Alarm clock, Bathrobes, Blackout curtains, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Complimentary tea, Desk, Free bottled water, Hair dryer, High floor, In-room safe box, Internet access – wireless, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Satellite/cable channels, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Socket near the bed, Sofa, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Wake-up service, Wi-Fi [free], Window that opens. The bed was Extra long bed, so the height challenged people can sleep happy, and had a Socket near the bed which is heaven for constant phone users like myself. Wi-Fi [free]? Check. Bathroom phone? Don't think I ever used this… But it was there! Smoke detector, Interconnecting room(s) available, Non-smoking, Extra long bed, and Safe/security feature? Excellent. The soundproofing was pretty good, and I loved the Blackout curtains.
However, the water pressure in the shower was a little… anemic. And the TV signal was patchy; I gave up trying to watch anything. In-room safe box? Yes. Alarm clock? Yes. Wake-up service? Yes. This is what you need when you're in a foreign country. Still, all minor complaints. The comfort level was sky high, and that’s what matters.
Services and Conveniences - The Little Things (and the Big Ones)
They've got Concierge, Luggage storage, and Laundry service. Cash withdrawal? Absolutely essential. Currency exchange? Super handy. Daily housekeeping? A blessing. The elevator, Front desk [24-hour]? Great. I did see a Convenience store on site but didn't use it. Doorman. The safe deposit boxes were very useful for keeping my stuff safe. They also have Dry cleaning, Ironing service, and On-site event hosting! Awesome!
I was surprised at the Invoice provided service, which is great for those taking business/vacation hybrid trips! There's a Gift/souvenir shop, which is a great way to remember your trip. They have Facilities for disabled guests, which is a good thing, though I'm unsure of how accessible the rooms are. They've got an Indoor venue for special events and Outdoor venue for special events! They also do Car park [free of charge].
Things to Do & Ways to Relax - Spa Bliss (If You Can Find It!)
Okay, the Spa… this is the bit that made me really excited. Massage, Sauna, Spa/sauna, Steamroom, Body scrub, Body wrap, Foot bath… The Spa facilities were amazing. The Body scrub was a revelation. I swear, I left feeling like a completely new person. Swimming pool [outdoor]? Yes. And Pool with view? Double yes! They also have Fitness center, but I didn't use it. However, finding the entrance was a slightly confusing treasure hunt, and a little more signage wouldn't go amiss. That search totally killed my Zen moment, and I couldn't quite enjoy the Spa the same way as I should have! It would have been more helpful to see the Spa section promoted more, or clearly signposted.
For the Kids - Family Friendly Status?
They have Babysitting service! Family/child friendly? Yes! Kids meal available? Awesome. Kids facilities. The Kids meal options were good and the staff were very accommodating. I saw them Family/child friendly, but I didn't see much in the way of Kids facilities, and there are no kid's club or anything like that.
Getting Around - Easy Peasy
Airport transfer? ✅ Taxi service? Ready and waiting. They also have Bicycle parking and Car park [on-site], which is great.
Internet Access - Stay Connected (Mostly)
Internet? Yes. Free Wi-Fi in all rooms!? YES! Internet [LAN]? Yes. Internet services? Yes. Wi-Fi in public areas? Yes. Laptop workspace. I had no problems with the Internet access – wireless, which is the most important thing.
The Verdict
Uncover Angkor's Secrets: Phnom Penh's Hidden Gem Guesthouse! is a mixed bag of delights and minor frustrations. It's not perfect, but it’s got SO much potential. The location is excellent, the food (mostly) divine, and the spa… oh, that spa! The staff were friendly and eager to please. The room was comfortable and well-appointed. Plus, the Couple's room is perfect for a romantic escape.
My Ultimate Recommendation
Book it. Absolutely book it. If you are looking for an amazing time, then this amazing place is the one. The "Hidden Gem" part is spot on
Sultan's Kislovodsk Palace: Unbelievable Family Room 6 Awaits!
Okay, buckle up, buttercups. This isn't your average travel itinerary. This is my personal, unfiltered, probably-slightly-oversharing experience at the Angkor Mithona Guesthouse in Phnom Penh. Prepare for questionable decisions, questionable food choices, and a whole lotta "OMG, I can't believe I just did that."
ANGKOR MITHONA & PHNOM PENH: The Totally Unscheduled Adventure (With a Sprinkle of Attempted Organization)
DAY 1: ARRIVAL & THE GRAND, SLIGHTLY OVERWHELMING, CRACK OF DAWN
- Morning (Around 6:00 AM - 9:00 AM): Landed in Phnom Penh. Humidity slapped me in the face like a wet fish. Immediately regretted my linen pants (too fancy, too easily wrinkled). The airport was… well, it was an airport. Got through customs, found a tuk-tuk driver who looked vaguely trustworthy (they all look vaguely trustworthy, right?), and yelled "Angkor Mithona!" like I knew what I was doing.
- The Tuk-Tuk Trauma: The ride was a blur of honking, motorbikes weaving like crazed bees, and the constant, unsettling feeling that I was about to become roadkill. My first thought was, “What have I gotten myself into?!” Second thought: “Maybe I should have booked that ‘luxury travel’ package.” Third thought: “I need a coffee. And possibly therapy.”
- Angkor Mithona - First Impressions (9:00 AM - 10:00 AM): Found it! Angkor Mithona. The guesthouse looked charming enough, with a lovely courtyard and that "budget-friendly bohemian chic" vibe. Checked in, sweaty and disoriented. The receptionist gave me a slightly pitying smile, and I immediately felt like I needed a shower. (Turns out, I did).
- The Room & the Bedbug Scare: The room was basic but clean. Thank God. I had a proper bed, a fan that actually worked, and the all-important mosquito net. I did a quick scan for bedbugs. Okay, I obsessively scanned for bedbugs. Found nothing. Success! (For now).
- The Coffee Quest (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM): Downstairs, the quest for caffeine began. They had coffee! Mediocre coffee, but coffee nonetheless. And strong! I needed to be awake for this adventure
- Orientation Walk and Street Food (11:00 AM - 1:00 PM): Got my bearings and tried to navigate the streets. Phnom Penh is a sensory overload. Smells, sights, sounds…oh my.
- My first food experience was an absolute treat! It was the most incredible Amok I've ever had (and I've had a few). The taste was so rich and fragrant, it will never leave me.
- Afternoon (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM): Nap. Nap. More nap. Jet lag is a beast. And the heat…good lord, the heat. Wake up, eat something light to keep me fueled.
- Dinner (7:00 PM): Ate at a local restaurant nearby, and I am still feeling the effects.
DAY 2: EXPLORING THE HEART OF PHNOM PENH (AND POSSIBLY REGRETTING IT)
- Morning (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM): Watched the sunrise while eating breakfast. Did the laundry and waited around the hotel room.
- The Killing Fields (Choeung Ek): This was the moment I have been dreading. I wanted to learn about it, but I wasn’t sure I could handle the emotional weight of it. But I kept telling myself that I had to honor the victims of the Cambodian genocide, and that I had a responsibility to bear witness.
- The audio tour was necessary. The stories were horrible. I cried. A lot. I don't think I have ever felt so useless. And it was… brutal. I mean, truly, gut-wrenchingly brutal. The memorial stupa, filled with skulls, was…I don't even have words. Felt extremely guilty for every single petty problem I had, ever.
- Quirky observation: The butterflies. There were so many butterflies fluttering around the memorial. It was almost… surreal. A strange juxtaposition of beauty and absolute devastation.
- Lunch (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM): After, I needed something to wash the horrors away. Found a simple vegetarian restaurant nearby, ate some rice and vegetables.
- Afternoon: Walked around, and got a deep tissue massage.
- Evening (7:00 PM - late): Ate another delightful dinner. Met some interesting people, shared stories, and got a bit tipsy on Angkor beer.
DAY 3: TEMPLES & THE FLOATING VILLAGE (AND A POTENTIAL BREAKDOWN)
- Morning (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM):
- Went to the Royal Palace. The architecture was, as expected, breathtaking.
- Quirky observation: The flash of the guards. Seriously, they stood remarkably still. Had to be a test of will. The intricacy of the gold and the general opulence was a bit much.
- Afternoon (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM):
- Tonle Sap Lake/Floating Village:* I really wanted to do this. It sounded interesting. The trip to the lake was an experience in itself.
- The floating village was both fascinating and deeply unsettling. The poverty was raw. The children, so thin, playing in the murky water. The sight of the overcrowded, rickety homes, rising and falling with the tide.
- Emotional Reaction: I felt… conflicted. It was easy to watch, to take photos, and to feel slightly superior. But that’s not what I wanted to do.
- Evening (7:00 PM - Late): Back to the guesthouse. Sat on the balcony, watched the chaos of the street below, and tried to process. Had a huge plate of noodles, and finally felt like my stomach decided to be nice to me.
DAY 4: THE MUSEUM & THE MARKET (AND BUYING STUFF I DON'T NEED)
- Morning (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM): National Museum of Cambodia. Incredible collection of Khmer art and artifacts. Took way too many photos.
- Afternoon (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM): Central Market. Oh, the chaos! The smells! The people! Bargained for a silk scarf (probably overpaid), bought some spices (I have no idea what I’ll do with them). Resisted the urge to buy a fake Rolex. Mostly.
- Evening (7:00 PM - Late): Last meal in Phnom Penh. Ate at a small, hidden restaurant. Had some amazing fish. The food here is just magnificent!
DAY 5: DEPARTURE & THE FOREVER MEMORIES
- Morning (8:00 AM): Woke up, lingered in bed, and avoided packing for as long as humanly possible. Said goodbye to the Angkor Mithona.
- The Flight: Headed to the airport. Reflecting on my trip. Cambodia is one of the most complicated places I've been. The beauty, the history, the poverty, the crowds. I'll never forget this.
Overall, a few points:
- The Good: The people. The food. The ancient temples. The sheer vibrancy of it all.
- The Bad: The heat. The humidity. The overwhelmingness (is that a word?). The tuk-tuk rides.
- The Unexpected: The emotional roller coaster. The feeling of being both incredibly enriched and completely exhausted. *And, the best part? The bedbugs never came. *Phew*.
This itinerary is a mess. It’s incomplete. It's overly enthusiastic at times and utterly defeated at others. But it’s honest. And that, my friends, is what a real travel experience is all about. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need a nap and to go through a mountain of laundry. And maybe start planning my next trip… because I'm pretty sure I'll have to come back.
